War: What is it good for? (Absolutely nothin’)

When I was a kid my brothers liked to play the game “war.” They would pretend to be soldiers and run around with plastic guns, hiding from the enemy and shooting. I suppose it was fun; I was busy changing Barbie’s outfit. Real war was the furthest thing from my brothers’ minds, I think.

There is a photo in today’s Washington Post of a Palestinian boy at “summer camp.” As fire rages behind him, the caption tells me, “he takes part in military-style exercises…” I wonder if this boy, who lives with war in his backyard, thinks this is fun?
